Thrifty Thursday: Vintage Plaid Dress

While out thrifting at our local Salvation Army this blue plaid number caught my eye. At first I thought it was a little busy. Then, I said, "The heck with it!", and tried it on. I really liked the way it fit and for a dollar you just can't go wrong ;).

At first I thought I'd pair it with a red belt but I just don't seem to have one that works. This wide navy one did the trick. Normally, I am a person that likes my belt and shoes to go together or at least my necklace and my shoes but I think this is one dress that can pull off the different colors :).

I added a vintage red plastic bead necklace to finish it of and ended up wearing my black bow pumps.

Now if I could just do something with this hair.
Hope you have a superdy duperdy thrifty day.

Dress: $1
Belt: $1
Necklace: $1
Leather Peep Toe Pumps: $1
Total Cost
$4

Thrifty FRIDAY is Here Again

What can I say? I was a tad busy yesterday and had no time to post my most recent project.

Apparently I had no time to take a "real" before pic either. I had already started priming this girl before I remembered to get a good shot.

Yeah, she was pretty sad as is the fact that I don't yet have a garage to do these kinds of projects in yet ;).
The end result was worth my time in the sweltering sun though.

I'm pretty happy with the way it came out. I know the kids will beat on her but she will do for now :)
I used the Martha Stewart double ring stencil with a gray acrylic paint from Folk Art on the top. I finished it off with a few coats of wipe on polycrylic.

I think my table is a happy little table now :)
Especially with my craiglist couch find :)
Hope you have a scrappy, happy, thrifty kinda day!

Thrifty Thursday, er um...Friday!

I purchased this cute little frame from my local SA a while back. I hung it on my wall where I wanted my photo collage to go and there it sat...for months I tell ya. Until, finally, I was issued a challenge and I actually scrapped a photo!!! It's been way too long and I thouroughly enjoyed myself.
I began by painting the picture frame Heirloom White by Rustoleum.

I removed the picture of the li'l country bumpkin and traced it onto a piece of white cardstock. Then I created my sunburst background in yellows and grays.

I added the family photo and the "love is spoken here" silhouette cut, a little washi, a doily and some enamel dots and called it good.

Here's a side by sid comparison of the before and after. I'm pretty happy with it.

And here it is in it's place of honor on my living room wall.

I think it's found it's happy home. Thank you for stopping by. Hope you have a great day.
I get to celebrate with one of the most amazing people in my life, my beautiful daughter is turning TEN!!

Have a great day and stay thrifty.

Thrifty Thursday Retro Fun

I found this dress at the local Bethel Thriftstore. It was singing my name.It had a few issues the major one being you could practically see China when looking into the arm holes...there were no actual sleeves...think batman ;) Totally 80's. I turned the dress inside out and began sewing up the waist, following the seam, about 1/2" in. I kept sewing that way and stopped when I felt the hole left would be comfortable for my arms. This was not a perfect science by any means and I had to pick out some stitches because I over sewed one side and the arm opening was cutting off the circulation to my right bicep ;).

Gosh, I need to get a photographer older than seven. Added the silver belt that was 50 cents.

Chunky teal necklace

Some amazing leather ruffled pumps that I scored for a dollar!

Thrifty Mother Load Monday

I seriously hit the jack pot at the Salvation Army today. I'll let you guess how much I spent ;).

Oh, oh, oh these shoes are in such great condition. At first I thought the gold ones might be a bit tacky but I tried them on and I really liked them. The gladiator sandals are LIKE NEW leather. I may have to find another home for them though because I'm not sure I like things around my ankles like that.

Tessa is paying me back for this silk parasol that she just HAD TO HAVE!

These dumbbells have 5lb weights on them and he threw in four 2 1/2 pounders and 2 more 5 pounders.

Water bottle with strap for our next hike. A fun winter cap and two clip on ties for Aaron

Three pair of church pants for Jakob (including Gap and  a upscale brand ). Also a pair of Aeropastale jeans that fit him so well.

Three like new shirts and a designer pair of jeans for Tessa (for the fall).

A NEW WITH TAGS dress for me. (maybe paired with the gold heals?)
So THE GRAND TOTAL for all of this
is
$20.50
Can you believe it? More than I usually spend but still WHAT A DEAL!!!!!
I hope you can find some amazing deals too!
The most expensive thing  that I purchased was the weights. Those were $10.00. The parasol was $2.00 but  I'm getting reimbursed for that ;).
Everything else was pretty much .50 cents and item except the miscellaneous things which were cheaper.

Vintage Remake Ruffle Collar Dress

Hello FRUMPMEISTER! Yes, my mother laughed at me when she saw me pick up this black beauty. I probably look like I could be a sister wife in this get up or Carrie's mother (scary, I know).

But a few snips here and there and she was ready for a night on the town or rather a three hour church service ;)

How 'bout an uncropped photo for ya! I guess I don't pay my photographers enough.

I love the round collar and the awesome thing is the ruffle is detachable so if I want to kick this dress up a notch with a cool necklace I totally can in a snap-or a few buttons ;).
Dress, Vintage: $1.00
Shoes, Isaac Mizrahi: $1.00
Belt: $1.00
Earrings: Target $3.00
OUTFIT TOTAL: $6.00

Thrifty Thursday: Refashionista

I was thrifting at the Salvation Army with my mom recently and came across this vintage beauty. My mama thought I was nuts, but I think the "after" has persuaded her that you can upcycle many a vintage dud. For a dollar why not try?!?!
Check out my sweet pumps! Yup one whole dollar, but the lace is black not navy :*(
Here it is with some sandals. I got the cherry red vintage necklace at a different thrift store for dollar. Belt was .50 cents at the SA. Sandals were a dollar or cheaper?
OUTFIT TOTAL $3.50

Thrifty Thursday: Boutique Seashells and Birds

I have this basket of shells in the kids/guest bathroom. Not much to look at, eh?!! But then I saw this picture on Pinterest and a lightbulb went off. My shells could be special. Maybe not silver plated $130.00 special but close enough.

So I picked up a can of Chrome spray paint for $3.67 at WM and got to work.

The starfish doesn't have the sheen that the other shells have. I think it must be too porous or something. I have plans to make a shadow box with a bunch of these shells glued in it.

And then I remembered the birds I had bought some time ago at Salvation Army (one with a chipped beak) and decided chrome would be the perfect "color" for my birds.

What do you think?

Are they amazing or what!!???

Thrifty Thursday: Boutique Dress

Lace covered shoes with bow: $1.00

Gray "The People Have Spoken" boutique dress: $2.00

I found this dress at Bethel the other day and I was instantly in love with the knit and the wrap waist. When I went to try it on the next day I noticed a hole at the waist seam. I broke out some gray thread and sewed it right up. Good as new and you'd never know, REALLY! Knit is forgiving like that. I want to wear this dress with my mustard shoes :). The mustard stone and silver necklace was given to me by my wonderful Mother in Law. I just love her.
I hope you have a wonderfully thrifty day!!!

The Mustard Pea Coat: Thrifty Thursday

So, before we get started...this coat is not thrifted :). My husband bought it for me for Christmas at Forever21. It was a whopping $40.00...sticker shock for me. The thing is that when I went to wear it the second or third time one of the buttons popped off. I was totally disappointed but I still had the receipt so off to the mall I went to return it for it's less than stellar performance.

I really wanted my money back because, let's face it, I'm thrifty and if a FORTY Dollar piece of clothing (that's not even wool) loses it's button on the second wear I feel cheated. But guess what, you only have 21 days to return something to Forever21 with a receipt. Lame. I was told they don't do store credit but that I could exchange the coat for anything in the store that equaled the same amount.

Off I went in search of a better "deal". Mind you I was shopping with my three year old-he was gettin' his groove on to the music in the store and hiding under every rack too. Not my idea of "retail therapy".
Faced with so many decisions and sizes I was truly overwhelmed (who knew department store shopping gave me anxiety) and finally decided I would just exchange the coat for the exact same thing and hope for the best.
There was only ONE left and it was in my size AND get this!!!! It was marked HALF OFF!!! NO WAY!!!
Making a long (three year old tantrum throwing story) short I was able to get the coat, a new shirt, a necklace, and some lip gloss all because I didn't want to put up with shoddy workmanship.
BTW I love my mustard coat-even more so now that it came with lots of extra goodies :)
Have a super thrifty day.
